One of my first dabbles into journalism was writing for my school magazine. I reviewed the Christmas lunch. Everyone starts somewhere. My passion for radio started whilst at secondary school. As part of my English lessons our class spent a week gathering local stories to record our very own radio news bulletin. Local radio station BBC Essex were there with us as part of our news challenge, providing expert tips and advice.
The rest is history.
GETTING STARTED AND THINGS I DO NOW
»
My career with the BBC started with some volunteering whilst at college, helping out with different programmes, assisting with marketing and promotions at outside broadcasts and working on community action projects. I joined BBC Essex as a Broadcast Assistant in 2006 where I'm currently based in Chelmsford. Occasionally I can be found at BBC Three Counties in Luton too.
Much of my work in radio is 'behind the scenes'. Using my huge amount of broadcasting knowledge, skills and experience my role involves a little bit of everything on all programmes from answering phones, scheduling and logging music, producing, mixing trails, presenting, sourcing guests, suggesting ideas, writing interviews, operating studio equipment and ensuring output runs smoothly.
PRESENTATION »
As a radio presenter I have a wealth of experience hosting & producing regular shows on radio stations across Essex from breakfast to drive time and specialist music programmes. More recently, I've presented on BBC Essex including The Soul Kitchen, two Easter music specials and the weekday afternoon show.
At the moment you can hear me on Gateway 97.8 FM with the Nineties Revival. I'm on air each Tuesday evening from 7 across Basildon and East Thurrock.
You can also hear me on three weekly editions of 'the guide' on BBC Essex. I'm brilliantly technical in the studio environment too.
PRODUCTION »
In a Station Sound producer capacity I've created many trails and campaigns for BBC Radio using Adobe Audition. From writing scripts, mixing production music and sound effects together, I've also produced several music documentaries and jingle packages. Click here and listen to some of my work.
In the studio I've produced speech led programmes such as weekend breakfast, lunchtime phone ins, mid-morning shows, drive time, gardening and The BBC Essex Quest. I've also driven studio desks for outside broadcasts such as breakfast shows, live sport commentary, air shows and carol concerts.
HEY MR DEEJAY »
Born in the eighties when the music was electric, it’s no surprise that I'm also a DJ. In 2002 I started my own mobile discos, providing professional entertainment for any occasion from birthdays to weddings.
Between 2004 and 2011 I held a seven year residency at Reflex 80s Bar in Southend. During this period I entertained hundreds of people every weekend. Find out more about my DJ services here.
